Tech Story #12 · Golden Age G5: al-Jazari — the robots of 1206
In 1206 al-Jazari's book showed 50 machines; his elephant clock moved its figures every half hour, driven by a slowly sinking water bowl, and his robot drummer ran on movable pegs, like code.
Robots — in the year 1206! 🐘⚙️
🛠️ Meet al-Jazari, chief engineer at the palace in Diyarbakır (now south-east Turkey).
📖 His book — The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices — shows 50 machines with drawings and step-by-step notes.
🕰️ Like his elephant clock: every half hour a ball drops, a bird spins and the figures move.
🤔 What made them move?
💧 A slowly sinking water bowl! A bowl with a tiny hole fills and sinks in about 30 minutes, pulling strings that set everything off.
🥁 His robot drummer ran on pegs on a turning wheel — move the pegs, change the rhythm. Like code!
