Workbench Skills Part 6: Measure current — the meter goes IN the circuit
Break the circuit and put the meter in series; across a battery in amps mode it is a short and the fuse blows.
Measuring current with a multimeter? NEVER do this! ⚠️🔋
💥 In amps mode the meter is almost a plain wire (≈ 0 Ω). Put it across a battery = a short circuit → the fuse inside blows.
🔁 Current flows THROUGH things, so the meter must sit IN the path (in series).
1️⃣ Dial to A (or mA)
2️⃣ Red lead to the A / mA jack (black stays in COM)
3️⃣ Open the circuit and put the probes in the gap
✅ Our LED: (9 V − 2 V) ÷ 470 Ω ≈ 15 mA — the meter shows 14.9 mA.
💡 Done? Move the red lead back to V before your next voltage test!
Read the voiceover (transcript)
- Measuring current? Never do this!
- In amps mode the meter is like a wire. Pop! Fuse gone!
- Current flows through, so the meter goes in the path.
- Dial to amps, red lead to the A jack, and open the circuit.
- Where does it go? Guess!
- In the gap! All the current flows through the meter.
- About fifteen milliamps: the LED's real current!
- Next: diode mode, find the plus leg of an LED. Follow for Part seven!
