Motors Part 7: What does KV mean? How fast will your motor spin
// WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
KV = RPM per volt with no load: a 2300 KV motor on 11.1 V spins about 25,500 RPM; higher KV = faster but less torque, so big props need low KV.
// LESSON NOTES
What does "KV" mean on a brushless motor? 🚁⚙️
❌ Not kilovolts!
✅ KV = RPM per volt — how fast the motor spins for every volt, with nothing attached.
🧮 1000 KV × 12 V = about 12,000 RPM (no load).
🌀 Put a propeller on and the load pulls the speed down a bit.
🐢 Big propeller? Pick LOW KV: slower, but more twist (torque) — like 300–700 KV on big camera drones.
⚡ Small, fast props love HIGH KV — racing drones use ~2,000–2,700 KV.
Read the voiceover (transcript)
- What does KV mean on a motor?
- Not kilovolts! KV means RPM per volt.
- A thousand KV on twelve volts? Twelve thousand RPM!
- That's with no load. A propeller pulls it down.
- Guess: which motor for a big propeller?
- Low KV! Slower, but more twist.
- Small, fast props love high KV!
- Next: the ESC, a drone motor's brain. Follow for Part 8!
