Motors & Drivers Part 6: Brushless motors — how drones spin so fast
A brushless (BLDC) motor has no brushes: an ESC switches its three coils electronically in turn, so it spins fast, cool and for a long time — drones, fans, e-bikes.
How does a drone motor spin SO fast? 🚁⚡
Old (brushed) DC motors feed their spinning coils through carbon brushes. They rub, spark and wear out. 💥
A brushless (BLDC) motor flips the design: the magnets spin on the OUTSIDE (the bell), and the copper coils stay still INSIDE.
A tiny controller — the ESC (electronic speed controller) — switches the 3 coil groups A → B → C, thousands of times a second. The magnets keep chasing the lit coils, so the motor spins. 🔄
Nothing rubs (only the bearings), so it's fast, efficient, quiet and lasts for years. ✅
Found in drones, PC fans, e-bikes and hard drives.
